The Fourteen Knots of Eternal represent the 14 worlds. Legend has that Lord Vishnu is Omnipresent in the Eternal Threads. It is these threads and beliefs, which take us from defeat, towards victory. It is due to this, that we get the blessings of Lord Vishnu and Mother Goddess Lakshmi.

The 14th Day After the Full Moon, during the BhadrapadShuklapaksh is called Anant (Eternal)Chaturdashi. This day, Lord Vishnu’s Eternal Incarnation is worshipped. It is said, that if One keeps a Fast on this Day, then One is relieved of all the Sins and Difficulties. This Day, a thread with 14 knots, is offered to Lord Vishnu and Hymns are sung. After worshipping, Men tie it on their Right Arm and Women on their Left. Generally, people keep a fast on this occasion. This year, this auspicious day will fall on 5th September. In Maharashtra, this day of AnantChaturdashi is also celebrated as Ganesh Utsav (Festival), which goes on for 10 days. After the end of this 10 day festival, the Idol of Lord Ganesh is immersed in the River or Sea.

People, who want to keep a Fast, have to take an Oath for Fasting, after doing their daily morning rituals and becoming fresh. As per the religious books, the worship of AnantChaturdashi should be done on the Banks of a Lake or a River. If this is not possible, then inside the house, place the vessel of worship and along with it, put the Idols of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Then apply Saffron, Vermilion and Turmeric on a Yellow Thread and Knot it 14 times and place it in front of the Idols. Then, thinking of the Eternal Lord, Chant the Mantra – Annataapanamah.

It is mentioned in the Holy Book Agni Purana, that One, who keeps a Fast on this Day, has to donate One Half of Chapati made from Rice Flour, to any Brahman and eat the Other Half, himself. Before completing and breaking the Fast, items like fruits and flowers which have been offered to the Lord, during the worship, should also be given to the Brahman and depending upon One’s status, donate some Alms/ Gifts also.

The results of this Fast bless you with Wealth and Prosperity. According to the story of Mahabharata, when the Pandavas lost their Kingdom and Wealth in Gambling and were wandering in the Foersts, then Lord Krishna had asked the Law Abiding Yudhisthir, and all his 4 brothers to keep this Fast of AnantChaturdashi. Subsequent to which, Mother Goddess Lakshmi, was very pleased with the worship and with her blessings, they got back their lost Kingdom and Wealth. Relating another anecdote, is that a Mighty and Truthful King Harish Chandra also got back his Kingdom and Wealth after performing the rituals of this Fast.
